Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve

There is not always time to plan a full-scale attack on the outdoors; sometimes you just need to get the kids out of the house for an hour or two.  The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve is a fantastic option for those in the Layton area.  Just a couple miles from our house, you can be there in a matter of minutes.  In addition, it is open year round, and it’s FREE!

It was a little on the chilly side the day we ventured out (Jan 20th I believe), but it was well worth the trip.  The boys loved the boardwalk trail and thought the 30-foot-high viewing tower was the greatest treehouse ever.  We had the customary picnic of PB&J sandwiches, string cheese, and Capri Sun juices as we sat atop our perch in the tower.  The Capri Suns provided great entertainment when Talmage decided to create a fountain by sitting directly on one of the pouches.  Never a dull moment with kids in the outdoors! All in all, it was a great outing with the boys. The entire length of the boardwalk is only one mile, so perfect for getting a little energy out of a 3-year-old Sawyer…and short enough that you can expeditiously stroll back to the car if you forget to pack an extra diaper for a 1-year-old TalmageJ. I would highly recommend this hike as a quick getaway when the kids, and you, need to get a little fresh air and you just can't make it a full-day excursion.
